Smart Home: The Next Big Gold Rush

All the big players have been gearing up for this for a long time. The first step was put the right device inside the house and put the remote control on people hands. This week, the “remote control leader”, Apple, announced that they will launch a new software platform for Smart Home.

The Home Kit will allow a developer to use a simple set of controls to toggle the states of devices or send commands to them. As expected from Apple, it will only work with devices the are part of the “Made For iPhone” program. This announcement, similar to announcements as iPod, iPhone, iPad and the MacAir, has the potential to be a trigger to start a new revolution. But this time, Apple will be not alone.

Microsoft bets on XBox for home entertainment, and they are thinking about ways to control the entire house someday, and this day is coming with the new Windows Phone 8.1. Embrace yourselves, because when the new smartphone apps integrate with the XBox and your Windows PC, the Cortana (Microsoft’s personal assistant) can be the hostess of your house.

Samsung wants a slice of this pie. The company already leads the U.S. Smart TV market and is growing fast in the smartphone market. It wouldn’t be surprising if the first words some people says when they get home were, “Hello, Galaxy”. But, if the Samsung devices are running on Android, Google, and the recent acquired Nest, will want join this club, and maybe reassess the Android @Home fiasco.

If you already did this, you will understand what I mean, or if not, maybe you will never have this misfortune of searching through dozen of names till you find an available one.

The perfect-good-name.com represents a great opportunity for brands, recently Facebook bought fb.com for $ 8.5 million. Hotels.com domain, today the most popular hotel booking website, was bought for $ 11 million in 2001, two years later the company was acquired in a $ 1.1 billion deal. Evidently, the numbers are really impressive but the domains are losing relevance in a new internet.

In the next years, the Internet will be invaded by new generic domain extensions like .shop, .technology, .microsoft, .london and .guru, these domains will be on the same level as others Top Level Domains such .com and .org and they are already available for purchase. Will this change the relevance of the domains? I say that in no more than 5 years and these domains will not even exists.

Search engines will contribute first to this near future. While hundreds of new domain extensions will be great for new brands, they will be perfect for fraud too. All sizes of brands will loose some important domain names due to fraudulent activities. Like a super hero saving the brands, the search engines will intervene in search results ignoring the keywords that appear in domain name. Without relevance, why does the domain name needs to be so perfect?

Today, new users don’t care about domain name. Yes, observe a child or any new internet user and you will see that they don’t actually use the address bar to type the complete domain name, they know Google and Google says what is good for them. They might write the complete domain name in the search box but not in the address bar, but if they do it right it’s not a problem because the DNS can do it work. So, if the user just searches, why do the companies need a domain name?

Feeling lucky, take over the world. Come on, if you own the biggest search engine in the world and you make the most used internet browser, and this browser is silently updating itself every week, why do your users really need memorize a domain name? That’s easy. No search results, no money. But if you were the faraway second biggest search engine of the world and you make the second most used internet browser, why does your user really need to see the search results? Think about it. This is all still in its early stages.

First of all think, why do you really need a website? In fact, there were dozens of reasons for someone do it some years ago, but today, there are few good grounds for spend money, time, and patience to create your very own home page.

My first piece of advice is simple: Your 13-year old nephew may know more about the future of the internet than most 30-year old experts. But no, he probably can’t create a glorious home page for you or your company. The Internet is just a few decades old, but it has been reinvented every couple years because people change their needs: children are getting on internet, mothers signing up on social networks, teenagers are running alway to mobile chat, and these tools will never be enought because people always want more, and the people make all systems blow. Ok, take a breath to go on.

For me, often a website is a race toward mediocrity, proof of this is that people pay media houses to buy some WordPress theme sold to thousands, make some changes on colors and logo, add a lot of unnecessary content and an image of someone smiling from Shutterstock, only to say “We are on Sesame Street and we open at 12.30!”. But they forget that Foursquare and Google Maps can do that for free with better results. Do you have photos? Instagram or Pinterest will help you. How about talk with your client? Facebook pages are public, just redirects your domain to the page and be happy. If you want to start selling online, maybe Shopify, Weebly or even old friend Ebay can help your company rise.

There’s an enormous gap between Amazon and the local business. It’s very important to offer your product to the client but a static home page will not increase your profits. Think about putting your energy on what your client needs using all that the internet can offer, without having to re-inventing the wheel.
